Letters to the Archdiocese of Chicago and Chairwoman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee

Portal ProgressforPoland.com occurred with letters to the Archdiocese of Chicago and Chairwoman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Ms. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen. In this letter to the Archdiocese we express our disapproval for using the Catholic Church to carry on  political action in organizing support for the establishment of the so-called international commission to investigate the causes of the catastrophy in Smolensk.


In the second letter we express our opinion that establishing of this commission does not make sense. We would also note that this action is only political in nature and constitutes an element of building support for the opposition political party. Letter addressed to the Chairwoman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee is also received  by other politicians.

Our speech arises from the belief that it was necessary to take a stand against the run of a large scale share of writing letters to the U.S. Congress on the establishment of this special commission. In our opinion, this action makes no sense and harms the interests of Polish.

We watch with feelings of uneasiness and concern as the Polish Catholic Church in Chicago has involved itself with political actions against the current Polish government.  This observation is manifested in the recent participation of most Polish Catholic Parishes with collecting signatures for a petition that demands an international investigation into the causes of the plane crash in Smolensk, Russia on April 10, 2010.

This catastrophe killed the Polish President and other important intellectual figures in the nation’s political sphere, but necessary actions have been undertaken.

We would like to focus attention to the fact that parties from the Republic of Poland and the Russian Federation are presently wrapping things up with the investigation.  They have been assigned to the case.  Action that calls up on an international commission is of purely political reasons.  Moreover, it shows a lack of trust in the designated agencies and their explanation surrounding the plane crash.  It is designed to weaken the decision made by specialists of both countries.  This occurred on the Russian soil, yet neither Russia nor Poland were requesting any international involvement.  Without the agreement of those two nations, the appeals in works to create such a body do not make sense, but solely show a political support and preference to the Right and Justice Party and its growth.

So, here we are voicing our deep worry with the fact that the Catholic Church in Chicago facilitates and supports a political cause.  These are actions backing up one political party specifically.  We find it hard to believe that the Church would take a definite political stand like this.  We are troubled and consider that a mistake, an error.  More importantly, such behavior is against the beliefs and actions of the Catholic Church in Poland, which does not occupy itself with this issue.  After all, it is a national matter and is not one relating to the Church.  We are counting on an intervention.

Dear Congresswoman,

Without doubt, for some time now your office has been receiving letters from voters of Polish descent who live in Chicago, Illinois.  They are demanding the creation of an international investigative commission for the purpose of examining the causes of the catastrophe of the Polish government airplane, which crashed on April 10, 2010 near Smolensk, Russia.  We are assured that you are aware of the fact that the Polish President Lech Kaczynski, his spouse, and other important intellectual and military figures in the nation’s political sphere died as a result.

We would like to argue to the contrary of this request.  Since, we believe that such action is harmful and it may negatively affect the relationships between the United States and the Republic of Poland and the Russian Federation.  Such an appeal has no base and is simply a manifestation of the ongoing struggles between the major political parties in Poland.  The entire matter is an idea supported by one of those parties.  Moreover, this summon to employ international parties does not make sense for the following reasons:

Firstly, the plane crash occurred on Russian soil, yet neither Russia nor Poland have requested additional international involvement.  Without the agreement of those two nations, and especially Russia the appeals in works to create such a body would be unsuccessful.  The reasons behind the catastrophe are being explained by authorized members from both countries.  Throughout the investigation the Russian specialists were accompanied by their Polish counterparts.  Independently of this, Jerzy Miller, the Minister of the Interior and Administration, has announced that he will release his report on the matter in a few weeks.  The ongoing official review is continuing and there is no reason to weaken its importance.

Secondly, Poland is an ally of the U.S.A.  Calling up this international commission would give the impression of lack of trust toward an ally’s government.  Neither the works of Miller’s commission or those of the delegated investigators have provided any reason to request an intervention.  The representatives and parties involved from both countries are cooperating well.  Just this past February, Polish specialists visited Russia and interviewed air traffic controllers who work in Smolensk.

Thirdly, the Right and Justice Party is the one who is driving this claim.  The catastrophe by Smolensk has become its theme and plan of action or agenda, which is used to fight the other contending political party in Poland.  The Republic of Poland is a country that has a stable democracy since 1989.  There exists a consensus in reference to Poland’s participation in NATO.  For all political forces in Poland, friendship and alliance with U.S.A. is imperative.  These feelings are evident in the participation of Polish military forces in missions in Iraq and Afghanistan.  Looking at things from the American point of view, it would be a mistake to get engaged in political actions of one group against the other.  While supporting the request for an international commission, the U.S.A. upholds the ideas of suspicion and skepticism toward an ally government; after all, the U.S.A. does not want to give such an impression.

In the fall of this year the parliamentary election will take place in Poland.  We believe that during this free and democratic election, the Poles themselves will make this decision.  For this reason this the  agency  assigned to the task will complete their investigation.  Thus the international commission has no purpose at this time.  The doubt and speculation about the matter is normal, however, questioning the ones in charge is unwarranted and it breeds negative ideas and unsupported theories.

•  Mysle, ze nie chodzi o strach przed prawda, tylko o strach przed konsekwencjami takiego medzynarodowego sledztwa. Zreszta nie nazwalbym tego strachem, poniewaz USA nie zaangazuja sie w takie sledztwo chocby dlatego, by nie psuc sobie stosunkow z Rosja. Natomiast presja by takie sledztwo wszczac swiadczy tragicznie o jakosci polskiej demokracji. Jedyny strach jaki odczuwam na mysl o miedzynarodowym sledztwie wynika z wizji wstydu jakiego bysmy sie najedli po publikacji jego raportu.

•  Szanowny Tomaszu Zabrowski, w tej sprawie nie chodzi wyłączne o wykrycie ewentualnych sprawców tragedii, czy o wymierzenie sprawiedliwości. Od wyjaśnienia tego bolesnego wydarzenia zależy bezpieczeństwo przelotu VIPów, z wszystkich państw. Jeśli w samolocie pod specjalnym nadzorem doszło do sabotażu, lub akcji terrorystycznej, to może to się powtórzyć i nawet prezydent Obama jest potencjalnie zagrożony. Przywódcom wszystkich państw powinno zależeć na dogłębnym wyjaśnieniu, przyczyn wypadku. Ambicje narodowe nie mają tu znaczenia. Mocarstwo Amerykańskie ma większe możliwości, niż Polska i powinniśmy sobie wzajemnie pomagać.
