Illinois Treasurer Dan Rutherford Supporting Visa Waivers for Polish Citizens

Illinois State Treasurer Dan Rutherford is calling for the passage of a federal bill to add Poland to the other 36 existing countries currently participating in the United States Visa Waiver Program (VWP). Legislation to add Poland to the VWP has been introduced by U.S. Senator Mark Kirk and by U. S. Representative Dan Lipinski (IL-03).

Rutherford recently met with Kirk in Washington, D.C. and discussed the issue. It is important to Illinois’ Polish visitors and citizens. Poland, a U.S. ally which has contributed troops to war efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan, is one of the few European countries currently excluded from the VWP.

The VWP, in place since 1986, allows citizens of participating countries entry into the U.S. for a maximum 90 day period without having to apply for an entry visa. Poland already allows U.S. citizens entry into their country without a visa.

“Poland has been one of our country’s most trusted allies in NATO and in our war efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan. They have been our diplomatic partner for well over a century and its constitution is second in age only to that of the U.S. I encourage our U.S. Congress to allow Poland participation in the Visa Waiver Program,” stated Rutherford.
