SPRINGFIELD – June 1, 2011 – Illinois Treasurer Dan Rutherford is pleased that the Illinois General Assembly has decisively voted to budget for the upcoming fiscal year without incurring additional debt through further bond issuances. He believes taxpayers deserve nothing less.
“I continue to believe the state must break its unsustainable cycle of borrowing to meet its financial obligations. I applaud the legislature’s discipline to make these difficult decisions and move into 2012 free from the issuance of new bonds. As the state’s banker, it will continue to be my responsibility to alert taxpayers when I believe money is being mismanaged. Let’s all strive to make Illinois a place where more jobs are created, the economy continues to move upward, spending stays within our means, and our backlog of debt will be repaid,” said Rutherford.
