CONGRESSMAN QUIGLEY SPEAKS ON HOUSE FLOOR ABOUT NEED FOR U.S. TO SUPPORT POLAND WASHINGTON – Yesterday, Congressman Mike Quigley (D-IL) made the following remarks on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives about the need for the United States to stand by and support Poland: “Madame Speaker, last week marked the 70th anniversary of the attack on Poland helping to launch the Second World War. Last week was also marked by an announcement that the Administration plans to scrap a planned missile defense system in Poland and the Czech Republic and refocus its missile defense program on protecting against short-range Iranian missiles. This realignment of priorities reflects the new threats we face. However, as we shift our focus, we must not forget the vital role played by our European ally, Poland. Poland has always stood by the United States, with support dating back to the Revolutionary War where Polish heroes like Casimir Pulaski fought to help fight and achieve American independence. Poland unilaterally repealed the visa requirement for United States citizens traveling to Poland. Indeed, Poland has always stood by us, and though I’d like to say we have returned that favor, we have not. Madame Speaker, it’s time to extend, and ultimately make permanent, the Visa Waiver Program. Our friends in Poland have proven their steadfast dedication to the cause of freedom and friendship with the United States. We must do the same.” Video of his speech can be viewed here.
