Congratulatory Statement Marking Poland’s 93rd Independence day

I wish the people of Poland the warmest wishes of success on the 93rd anniversary of the nation’s independence.
Since the early days of this country, Polish people have contributed greatly to our nation. Generals Kosciuszko and Pulaski for instance, provided our revolutionary armies with training that was instrumental in beating the British and securing our own independence. Today, Polish troops fight alongside National Guard troops from Illinois and other US military units in Iraq and Afghanistan in the global war on terror.

Poles have made a lasting impact around the world as well. Since 1918, nineteen people of Polish descent have been awarded the Nobel Prize. During that same period, at least two Poles have gone on to become heads of state of other countries (Israel and The Holy See) and one of those became Pope. Poland has excelled in education as well, boasting a literacy rate of over 99 percent.

Poland has been a leader in democracy and equality too. It created the first democratic constitution of any European country and the Polish constitution is the second oldest one in history. And just recently, Polish parliament chose their first female speaker.

I am honored to be treasurer of the state with the highest concentration of Polish people outside of Poland. Throughout our shared histories, Poland has been an invaluable partner. I look forward to continued partnerships with my Polish friends to bring prosperity to our respective constituencies.
