Illinois State Treasurer Dan Rutherford Reacts to Fitch Ratings’ Warning, Which Coincides with the Two Year Anniversary of Illinois General Assembly’s Income Tax Hike Passage
SPRINGFIELD—January 11, 2013—“Fitch Ratings announced that the agency has placed Illinois’ general obligation bonds rating on negative watch.  Fitch decided to do this because of the state’s inability ‘to address its large and growing unfunded pension liability.’  The next step could potentially be the downgrade of the state’s credit rating from Fitch.  Failure to enact pension reforms will eventually bring Illinois to its financial breaking point, and it will be worse than any fiscal calamity we have seen thus far in this state.  Our state’s credit rating cannot afford to take another hit.”

New Economics = Eco-nomics
As we all are going thru recent recession, trying to adapt to the latest changes in the world's and American economy, many of us are questioning the validity of our assumptions about the workings of the market mechanics, the extent and boundaries of our economical knowledge and the accuracy of our assessment of all the constants and variables that shape our economical environment. For albeit all of the Nobel Prize winning works on economy and all of the financial institutions created to avoid any economical calamity threatening our system, it did not manage to eradicate poverty, diminish the gap between highest and lowest incomes and recently it failed to prevent the worst recession since great depression. Considering these failures in the light of recent global developments we can conclude that the system we created needs major changes and it needs them quickly. But to heal our economy we need much more than to admit the existence of these problems and to commit ourselves to changes. In order to start applying the medicines, we need to accurately diagnose the problem(s) first.

Treasurer Dan Rutherford Supports Keeping Tamms Correctional Center Open, Calls for Strategic Planning
Illinois Treasurer Dan Rutherford says Tamms Correctional Center should not close, as proposed by the governor earlier this year.  He is pleased that the bipartisan Illinois Commission on Government Forecasting and Accountability (COGFA) voted against the governor’s recommendation of closing the facility.  Rutherford toured the supermax prison in March.  “Closing Tamms would pose a significant public safety threat to prison guards and communities across Illinois,” said Rutherford.  “Inmates at Tamms have proven to be dangerous; many inmates who are sent to Tamms have maliciously attacked prison workers.  Segregating these inmates at Tamms is at least one way to ensure that they don’t continue to cause harm.”
